Behind the scenes of payroll: Meet Natalie

7th September 2023

Next in our ‘behind the scenes of payroll’ series in support of National Payroll Week, we speak to Natalie Deasy, a payroll adviser at Rowleys.

  1. Describe your role and responsibilities as a payroll professional? What does a typical day look like for you?

I process and complete payrolls for roughly 70 clients in a month, including pension submission and PAYE liability this is done with accuracy and time sensitivity.

When applicable, I also assess pensions enrolments and complete re-declaration of compliance for pension.

Other responsibilities include assisting the payroll team as needed and liaising with clients to assist with all aspects of their payroll.

  1. What motivated you to pursue a career in payroll? Were there any specific experiences or interests that led you to this area?

I originally started working in a purchase ledger team at another firm, where I was a supervisor for nine years. I was then asked if I’d like to move into payroll. I have now been working in payroll for over 11 years and I love it!

  1. What do you enjoy the most about working in payroll?

Every day brings something new. My favourite part of payroll is calculating statutory payments. I love a new challenge!

  1. Payroll processes can be complex and subject to frequent changes in regulations. How do you stay updated with the latest laws and regulations?

I’m always looking into up-and-coming legislation changes. I also receive regular email updates from HMRC and CIPP to help keep us up-to-date.

  1. Technology has significantly impacted payroll processes in recent years. Can you share some insights into the payroll software and tools you use?

We have recently changed to a new software (Paycircle) this is so much more up to date and user friendly. We have access to an online chat and community to which I can ask questions and view any top tips from other company users.

  1. Continuous learning is essential in any profession. What steps do you take to enhance your skills and knowledge within the payroll industry?

Rowleys has recently provided me with a membership to ACT through the Payroll Centre. This in the first instance assesses your knowledge of payroll by giving you quizzes to do and then upon results offers guidance in anything that may need enhancing.

  1. What advice would you give to someone considering a career in payroll? What qualities or traits do you believe are essential for success in this field?

I think anyone who is interested in becoming a payroll professional should go for it. It’s the best thing I ever did. I think it’s essential to have excellent organisational skills, be passionate about getting it right and love being a part of a team.

  1. What are your interests outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family.

  1. What do you enjoy most about working at Rowleys?

I have been with Rowleys for 18 months now and I love it here. I get enormous satisfaction knowing I’ve paid employees correctly or given advice to ensure an employee is paid correctly.

I love being part of the team at Rowleys. Everyone is happy to help each other.
