Here, Sam shares his experience of life at Rowleys.

Sam Addy, Corporation Tax Assistant

Tell us more about your current role

I am a Corporation Tax Assistant, with over 4 years experience in the role alongside training towards becoming CTA qualified. Mainly work around Corporation Tax compliance and advisory projects.

What type of clients/projects do you work on?

I work with clients ranging from owner managed businesses (OMBs) to larger multinational groups. I manage their Corporation Tax compliance, filing/payment requirements whilst maximising claims and elections to help provide an accurate and quality service.

I’ve also had the pleasure in being involved in the curation of research and development (R&D) reports whilst quantifying the relevant qualifying expenditure needed to produce a robust claim. And, I’ve been involved in working on some more complex advisory projects such as corporate restructures and demergers.

“At Rowleys I get plenty of autonomy, the opportunity to work on a variety of interesting projects, whilst still getting plenty of support to help with my development. The culture is really friendly and the work/life balance is the best I’ve had in a work place.”

What’s the training and development like at Rowleys?

The training and development at Rowleys has been faultless, I have been exposed to a different variety of work in my short time at Rowleys, compared to what I have previously experienced, which has broadened my horizons as well as really helped gain a real passion for the role and the wider tax landscape. The advisory side was something I was always extremely interested in but hadn’t had much exposure, however, since joining I have been given a hands on role on a variety of projects and been supported along the way.

I have been massively supported in my CTA training. Rowleys give me time out to study.  This helps me to focus fully on the exams, which aren’t easy!

What’s next for you or what are you looking to achieve in your role?

My main goal is to become fully qualified by completing my CTA qualification. Once doing so, I’m hoping to grow into a more client facing role to develop professional relationships and networks and across the industry.

What’s the team like at Rowleys?

The team at Rowleys is really great. It’s a really friendly environment, with an emphasis on teamwork to achieve our goals/deadlines. Since I’ve joined, I’ve been made to feel welcome and have felt very included both in projects and amongst colleagues.

What about work/life balance?

Work/life balance at Rowleys is the best I’ve had in a work place. Don’t get me wrong there are stressful/busy periods such is the nature of the industry. However, there is a great team here who support each other during those times.

This year I became a father to a beautiful baby girl and family is a very high priority to me. I live approximately an hour’s commute (on a good day) from the office, so hybrid working gives me the opportunity to have a couple of days each week where I am able to have more quality time with loved ones.

The variety of monthly social events also allow for a bit of down time with colleagues with activities inclusive to everyone. This provides us with a more relaxed environment to enable us to get to know each other informally.

What’s the best thing about working at Rowleys?

Working with such a supportive, friendly team who encourage development as well as providing a great work/life balance.

When you’re not at work, where can you be found/what to you like to do?

Spending time with family is most important to me, so I’m often running around after my 8 month old daughter who always keeps me on my toes! On a weekend, you’ll find me setting myself up for misery watching Leeds United (if not playing football myself!), or sat relaxing with a glass of wine whilst gaming.
