Vacancy – AUTUMN 2022 Medical Accounts Trainee (School leaver)
Rowleys is an independent accountancy firm working across the East Midlands, with our office based in Leicester, near Junction 21 of the M1. We are a forward thinking firm who are continually investing in our people and their development. We are looking for like-minded individuals to join our team and be a part of our future growth.
We are looking to recruit school leaver in our Specialist Medical Department who wants to learn and develop in to a qualified accountant. Our trainees are supported with their studies, using a highly respected training provider and we support people with time off for study through a block release programme. We genuinely understand the balance that is needed for trainees who need to learn on the job but also have the space to get through their professional studies successfully.
The attraction with a career at Rowleys is that the work in our team can be varied, and with us being in one location working with a specialist service line you can make a difference. Our Medical team operate predominantly with GP Practices and the GP’s, along with some related organisations that often sit alongside these. The world of the NHS and General Practice is very niche and therefore as a firm we structure our team to work autonomously from the rest of the firm, ensuring there is a focus on the sector and the knowledge and expertise is relevant to the clients. This does however mean that our accountants can often be heard talking to our GP clients about Accounts, Personal Tax, Partnership Tax, NHS Pensions or specific income streams that are only relevant to GP’s. This role will support the growth of the department but also bring opportunities to develop quickly, dealing with clients directly and working closely with the Manager and Head of Medical in the team. This is a complex area with lots to learn, so we feel is an exciting role for the right individual to learn about the nuances of this specialist sector.
Throughout the training contract you will learn the bedrock of accounting and tax preparation. Gaining a good understanding of the areas of GP Practices, Personal Tax and the government changes that often impact our advice to our clients. This ensures that people in our team have a rounded knowledge of all elements of accounting and tax.
We operate a hybrid working model, so as a trainee you will split your time between working from home, visiting the office, visiting clients when required and studying for your professional exams.
We are looking for candidates with a strong desire to learn and progress, and we give increasing responsibility when an individual is ready, rather than at pre-determined
times through a fixed matrix. As an independent firm based in one location it means we can be flexible in our approach.
Our broad expectation of roles and responsibilities during the five year training contract is set out below.
We expect School Leavers in this role will study for the AAT qualification for two years before moving on to the ACA qualification.
The main responsibilities of this role over the training contract will include:
- Accounts preparation for a range of practices.
- Preparing tax computations for the practices, taking account of any tax sensitive areas and learning the important areas to look out for.
- Personal tax preparation for the individuals connected to the practices,
- Assistance with GP’s government declarations such as pension statements.
- Attendance in client meetings to discuss their financial and tax affairs.
- Training on personal tax and the complexities around Medical Practices work.
- Working closely with other team members and on occasion on your own, with support where required.
- Experience of clients meetings and telephone calls, giving you the ability to learn how to communicate effectively to get the work done.
- Delivering an excellent level of customer service, managing and exceeding client expectations, responding to all ad-hoc queries in a timely manner.
- Studying for professional qualifications.
