Charity Rounders Tournament

On the warmest summer evening of the year so far, a team of 10 enthusiastic individuals from Rowley's made their way to Grace Road to participate in Spearing Waite's,  Vantis Corporate Challenge which was a rounders tournament attended by 15 other local professional businesses.

On our arrival we found out that we had been drawn in a tough group, but we were determined to rise to the occasion.

In our first game against Spearing Waite, our captain, Lisa Austin, won the toss and decided to field first, and we restricted them to 9 ½ rounders. This was due to some excellent bowling skills from Paul Taylor and major contributions from our fielders, namely the ever alert Craig Shevas at back stop, Chris Booth at first post, and some enthusiastic ball chasing from Lesley Nice, Steve Robinson, Louise Lee, Bob Clark and Lisa Austin. Lesley showed true commitment by leaping over the boundary fence to chase after a ball. Louise and Bob showed good bowling skills and even had the bruises to prove it. Rounders were achieved by many team members giving us a total of 6 ½ points.

Our second game was against Berkley Burke. We won the toss again and chose to bat first. By this point we had re-read the rules and our tactics were agreed. Our aim was to get to 2nd base whatever the cost. We had a shuffle round with the fielding and Natalie Adcock covering 4th post with ease and Victoria Sharpe and Paul Taylor making some excellent catches to get our opponents out. We stuck to our aim, dodged a few flying bats and achieved a huge 14 Rounders, winning the game!

Overall we came 4th in our group with a total of 20 ½ points. Spearing Waite won with 29 ½ and Mattioli Woods 2 were second with 23 ½ points.

Spearing Waite went onto the final but lost against Mattioli Woods 1, who were an outstanding team!

We had an excellent team spirit and are looking forward to our next rounders match.  We would like to thank everybody who took part and supported us on the night.
