Forthcoming Postal Strike

Matters to consider:

Now that the Communication Workers Union has announced that its workers have voted in favour of a nationwide strike at Royal Mail, there could be serious repercussions for businesses and individuals when the strike starts.

We therefore suggest that all businesses consider taking the following action:-

  • Update your computer database immediately with the current email addresses of your clients/customer/suppliers.
  • Consider sending invoices/correspondence to clients/customers/suppliers electronically.
  • Speak to all of the businesses that you buy goods/services from and ask them to send invoices/correspondence etc to you electronically.
  • Speak to all of the businesses that owe you money and suggest to them that they pay you by BACS in future.
  • Speak to all of the businesses that you owe money to, and inform them that you propose to pay them by BACS, and obtain their relevant bank details.

Alternatives

If there are any urgent letters or parcels that need to be sent, you should consider using Royal Mail Special Delivery, which guarantees next day arrival, and gives the sender a receipt.

Although this is more expensive than sending mail by standard post, Special Delivery normally operates during a strike.

There are other more expensive alternatives to Royal Mail, which include Service Point, which operates out of W H Smith stores in the UK and is operated by DHL, TNT and Fedex.

Conclusion

Failure to implement some or all of the above ideas could result in serious disruption and cashflow problems in your business.
