Charity fundraising

Age Concern Oadby and Wigston is a non -profit making organisation with a commitment to supporting older people living in the local community. The centre at Paddock Street has been running successfully since 1979 and in addition we run a lunch club in Oadby that provides hot meals for the elderly. Since its inception Age Concern Oadby and Wigston has grown beyond recognition and we now serve around 70 hot lunches a day, offer a variety of activities and provide hairdressing and chiropody services at the Paddock Street Centre. We also have an Advice and Information Officer who offers advice and assistance in a number of areas particularly with regard to benefits. Around 160 volunteers are active in supporting the work that we do.

Aims

Our aim is to 'promote the relief of elderly people in any manner which now or hereafter may be deemed by law to be charitable within the borough of Oadby and Wigston.'

Client Profile

Oadby and Wigston is a compact borough of 56,000 people on the outskirts of the city of Leicester. The community is diverse but has a high proportion of people over the age of 50. We have a diverse client base, the ‘younger retired’ who are best described as in their fifties and early sixties, this group tend to use the centres for the various activities that are on offer. We serve a middle group of clients who are older but still fit and agile and who come because they enjoy good food at a reasonable price, join in the activities and socialise.  There are a range of activities on offer the most popular being computer courses, art classes, decoupage, calligraphy and dance. We have a further client group who are brought in by converted minibus and for whom the centres provide social contact and a hot meal. Finally we have a frail and elderly unit (the Elderberries) that looks after older people that have been referred to us from Social Services. Age Concern Leicester Shire and Rutland also hire this facility twice a week.”
